I ran the lectures and workshops for the Mongolia startup support staff invitational training program. Participants were practitioners from Mongolian startup support agencies and university incubators, and the entire program was delivered with consecutive interpretation.

The topic was self-sustaining operating models for startup support spaces. Opening a space is not the hard part; keeping it alive in year three is. I laid out the 6 models I put together while running 3 startup spaces in Seoul myself.

Spaces die for mostly the same reason

It is not because the budget was cut. People stop coming before the budget is cut. Once tenant companies start using the space only as a ‘desk,’ that space has already lost its function. Self-sufficiency is not a matter of collecting rent; it is a matter of creating things that can only happen in that space.

The workshop wasn't about picking one of six models. It ran in the order of identifying which model you stand on now and what to add next.

Materials are rebuilt on the assumption of interpretation

Consecutive interpretation doubles your speaking time. Bring 90 minutes of material and you will get through half of it. Keep sentences short, put one message on each slide, and always show the numbers on screen. When I prepare an overseas program, this is the first thing I do.
